[Korea's traditional coming of age ceremony]
Traditionally, Korean people would celebrate the coming of age ceremony for young people turning 20 in order to raise their awareness about roles and responsibilities that come with being an adult.
Boys wore traditional Korean clothing together with a 'gat,' an adult's hat, during the ceremony called a 'gwallye.' Meanwhile, the ritual for young women would be called a 'gyerye,' where girls dressed in Hanbok would be taught the virtues of a women. The coming of age ritual was a prerequisite for both men and women to get married.
