Department of Civil Engineering Professor Sohn Gwang-ik (57) received a presidential citation for his contributions to national development through water resource conservation management at a government event for the World Day for Water held at the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO) at 2 p.m. on the 20th for the 2015 'World Day for Water (March 22)'.
Professor Sohn Gwang-ik contributed in improving the stabilization of river courses through the 'establishment of sand management plans for river course stabilization' and 'a study on the hydrological model for Han River embankment designs', and for helping in establishing flood control plans such as 'next-generation flood defense technology' and 'study on scale-calculating standards for dam emergency discharge facilities'.

Professor Sohn is currently leading the 'Water Disaster Information Platform Convergence Technology Research Team', in which four institutes such as YU, Konkuk University, Kyungpook National University and the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water) are conducting joint studies with large-scale research funding from the government.

Professor Sohn earned his PhD in civil engineering at the Utah State University in the United States and was appointed as a professor in Civil Engineering at YU in September 1994. He is actively conducting research in his major fields of study such as hydraulics and hydrological studies.
