YU President Noh Seok-kyun selected for the National Academy of Engineering Korea and Professor selected for the Korean Academy of Science and Technology
Regular memberships given only to the 'top' scholars in the engineering and science technology sectors of Korea

YU President Noh Seok-kyun (left) and Professor Joo Sang-woo were selected as regular members in the nation's top engineering technology and science academic groups of the National Academy of Engineering Korea and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology.
YU President Noh Seok-kyun (61, photo, left) was selected as a regular member of the National Academy of Engineering Korea (NAEK). After being selected as a general member in 2014, he became a regular member in 2016.
Mr. Noh did his undergraduate studies at Yonsei University, then went on to KAIST (master's), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (PhD), and Cornell University (post-doctorate). He was picked up in 1992 by YU as a professor in chemical engineering. He is currently a lifelong member of the Korean Chemical Society, Polymer Society of Korea, Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, and he is also a regular member of the American Chemical Society. He also served as the co-president of the National Federation for the Realization of Proper Science Technology Society. His major research achievements include 104 SCI and SCI-E class theses, 207 presentation theses in domestic and foreign academic conferences, 9 books and essays, 19 patents registered, etc., and the amount of research funding he received since 2000 amounts to 7,099,500,000 won. In 2013, he received the 'Proud KAIST Alumni Award'.
NAEK is an academic research institutes established to find and respect excellent engineering scientists who made considerable contributions to the development of engineering and technologies in the academic, industrial and national institutes, and it includes leaders who are leading the domestic engineering sector as its members. As it is the nation's top association for engineers, the membership qualifications are very strict. Membership eligibility is given only to persons who worked in the engineering, science technology, or other relevant fields for at least 15 years and displayed brilliant contributions. Regular members, whose capacity is at 300, are appointed from general members under the age of 65 and approved at the general assembly. Regular members are given considerable influence and status in the engineering and industrial technology sector such as having the authority to recommend new members.
A total of 27 people were newly selected as regular members this year at NAEK, and they were selected from a total of six fields such as electric and electronic information engineering, mechanical engineering, construction environment engineering, chemical bio engineering, material resource engineering, and technology management policies. A total of 12 were selected from the academic circles such as YU President Noh Seok-kyun, Seoul National University Professor of Electric Information Engineering Lee Gwang-bok, and Seoul National University Professor of Mechanical Aviation Engineering Cho Maeng-hyo, while 15 were selected from the industrial circles such as Samsung Electronics CEO Jeon Dong-soo and Director of the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials Lim Yong-taek.
Meanwhile, Professor of Mechanical Engineering Joo Sang-woo (57, photo, right) was selected as a new regular member for 2016 by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST).
Professor Joo Sang-woo whose major field of study is in fluid dynamics and nano-engineering, studied at Seoul National University (bachelor's, master's), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (PhD), and Northwestern University (post-doctorate). He served as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois and Wayne State University and has been serving as a professor of mechanical engineering at YU since 1995. In 2009, he was selected for the 'WCU (World Class University) Project' supported by the Ministry of Education and served as the director of the 'WCU Nano Project Team' until 2013. In the past five years since 2011, he published 200 SCI papers related to thermal fluid dynamics and nano-engineering, made 38 presentation theses at academic conferences, published 5 books and translated books, and registered 1 domestic patent and 3 international patents. He also served as a member of the National Science 7 Technology Council. He is now serving as a member of the National Research Foundation engineering team fluid engineering council from August 2015.
KAST was launched in 1994 and it is an academic organization comprised of the top scholars in the science technology sector who were recognized for their academic excellence in Korea and abroad. Selection of regular members must first undergo deliberation by the member screening committee. After reviewing the various achievements in specialized fields such as quantitative and qualitative research, and academic books and patents, only scholars recognized domestically and internationally for their academic excellence are selected. As of January 1, 2016, there are a total of 488 regular members and they will participate in academic and international exchange related to science technology, or provide proposals and counsel. This year, a total of 28 new regular members were selected in the five fields of policy, science, engineering, agriculture and fisheries, and pharmaceuticals.
