  YU College of Medicine Professor Lee Joon-yeop (37, Ophthalmology) swept academic awards at various academic conferences in both Korea and abroad, receiving attention as a next-generation researcher that will lead Korea’s ophthalmology in the future.

 Professor Lee (photo on left) received the academic award at the 2017 Korean Retina Society General Academic Conference held at the Seoul Conrad Hotel on December 2. The Korean Retina Society academic award is given to the member with the most outstanding research achievements made in the past two years. Professor Lee published his study on predicting treatment reactions of diabetic macular edema in the most authoritative journal in ophthalmology science (impact factor 8.204) and was selected for the academic awards for researchers under 40.
 Professor Lee also won the Rising Academic Award at the 118th Korean Ophthalmological Society Academic Conference held at the Seoul Grand Walker Hill Hotel on November 4. The Korean Ophthalmological Society Rising Academic Award selects two winners every year to support the research activities of young researchers who are expected to contribute greatly in the development of ophthalmology. Professor Lee was given this award by proposing research plans for new pathogenesis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, and received academic research funding as a sponsorship from the Busan St. Mary’s Hospital Ophthalmology Center Sodam Scholarship Association.

 Professor Lee won the ‘Young Ophthalmologist Award’ from the US Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology for his research on retinal detachment and in September of last year (photo on left), he received the World Ophthalmologist Research Award (photo on right) given by the European Retina Society for the first time as a Korean for his research on macular degeneration. He has thus been recognized internationally for his research capacities.
 Professor Lee earned his bachelor’s at YU and PhD at KAIST, and served as a clinical instructor at the Seoul Asan Medical Center and became a professor at YU since March 2016. He is currently focused on the treatment and surgery of retinal disease patients at the YU Hospital Ophthalmology Department. He also operates a lab for basic research on blood vessels and vision science, and he is also engaged in active research in the basic science sectors clinical medicine.
