Support with 70,000 Euro by international automobile illumination expert group under UN - International acceptance of research power

Research on evaluation of safety of automobile direction projection lamps

Will head international research on vehicle illumination performance evaluation and provide empirical basis for establishment of international legislation

[February 18, 2022]

Professor LEE Chan-soo of Department of Electronic Engineering of YU will conduct an international research with the support by GTB (Groupe de Travail Bruxelles, The International Automotive Lighting and Light Signalling Expert Group) which is international automobile illumination expert group under UN

Especially, Professor LEE Chan-soo attracted more attention because his world-level research power was accepted with a GTB research project for the first time in Asia. In past, GTB research services were mostly conducted by colleges or institutions in Europe or North America.

The professor’s research team will conduct a research on “Signal light projections with direction indicator.” The research project will be conducted by July this year with 70,000 Euro (about KRW 95 million) of research budget.

Professor Lee described his research plan, “As floor guide lamps linked with automobile direction indicators provide additional information on direction in various dynamic environments where automobiles are operated, it will be verified whether such guide lamps distributed on the floors of various automobiles will help the traffic weak such as walkers and bicycle riders or cause issues.”

The research team plans to construct virtual environment such as crossroads and T-shape intersections and to conduct virtual environment tests using HMD (Head Mounted Display), to perform detailed verification through road running simulators of Korea Expressway Corporation, and to perform verification based on actual vehicles in K-city (a self-driving test city) of Korea Automobile Testing&Research Institute (KATRI) of Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

Professor Lee expected, “The result of this research will provide empirical basis for Automobile sub-committee under the European Economic Commission of the United Nations (UNECE/WP29) to establish legislation on projection base lamps such as turn signal guide lamps. It will be the base for development of communication lamps and scenarios related with not only lamp performance evaluation but also self-driving vehicles in future.”

The GTB research project is the result of international acceptance of government-supported projects and industry-academy cooperative researches conducted by him until now. Professor Lee operated Automobile illumination fusion expert cultivation team with the support by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2015 to 2020 and is leading a world level research team specified in automobile illumination.  The research team has conducted basic and applied researches on automobile illumination to enhance visibility and safety of drivers in bad weather environment and on night roads using weather environment test beds. He attracts attention with presentation of research results in famous international academic meetings and GTB expert meetings including International Symposium on Automotive Lighting (ISAL) and International Congress: SIA VISION, etc. Also, he is continuously conducting industry-academy cooperative researches including evaluation of safety of guide lamps and evaluation of visibility in climate/environment with professional automobile component enterprises including SL Corporation.
